See you at the Vintage and Handmade Textile and Fashion Fair

From 10am to 4pm on Saturday 1st October Backstitch will be setting up stall at the V&H Textile & Fashion Fair in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall.

As their website says, 'A 'must visit' for anyone interested in vintage fashion and home textiles, sewing or creating.' 'Dozens of stalls over two floors brimming with lovely goodies'... sounds fun, huh?

There is free parking all over town, and entrance to the event is free too.  There is also a Vintage Tearooms set up with teas, coffees and homemade cakes, all served on pretty vintage china.

I can't wait to set up shop, and am looking forward to meeting as many Backstitch customers, existing and new, as possible!

New Simplicity Lisette Patterns in the Shop

We're getting loads of new patterns in at the moment.  Go and check out the Patterns department of our shop.  Earlier this week it was the new season Oliver+S patterns, and within the next week we are expecting the new season Colette patterns, but today... drum roll please... it's the new Simplicity Lisette patterns.

There are two new women's patterns, each in two sizes.  The 2059 Continental Blouse, Skirt & Dress, and the 2060 Itinerary Dress.

The Continental is an easy, pull-on blouse featuring an interesting gathered-back detail, with an A-line, bias-cut skirt The A-line bias-cut skirt is designed for colour blocking or to highlight mitred stripes at the front and back seams. The pattern also includes an easygoing belted dress.

The Itinerary Dress is a stylish pull-on dress with a gently curved yoke and soft gathers at the front, a button closure at the left shoulder, and a matching obi sash. You can mix prints and solids to create effect.

Make sure when ordering that you pay attention to the body measurements in the further images to buy the correct size - as with many sewing patterns the dress sizes are very different to those we are used to our our stores.

Backstitch Talks to the Designers: Jamie Christina

This is an article I wrote for Sewing World magazine. I thought you guys would like to read it too, so you can find out a little more about Jamie Christina:

An interview with Jamie Christina, the pattern designer who is bringing some Californian sunshine to the UK by way of her dress patterns.

Although not a traditional one, Jamie Christina’s story will be familiar to many. An example of how life can lead you along a path that you yourself would never have predicted. A stay-at-home mum to three children, she turned to fabric and sewing as a creative outlet. Inspired initially by a community quilting class, Jamie was so enthused by her newfound love of fabric that she started her own online fabric store, Phat Fabric. Simultaneously she was using her cottons to create her own designed garments to sell in her Etsy store. ‘I followed a creative spark and dove head first into the discovery process of fabric and design.’ Before long she realised that there was a demand for the patterns of her creations, and so began to study pattern drafting and industry standard sewing techniques in order to develop these for production. ‘The success of my patterns has been the added bonus to what began as a creative adventure’.

Jamie Christina patterns are made for the emerging sewer who doesn’t want to wear what everyone else is wearing, and doesn’t want to spend days working on the garment. The patterns are written so that both the experienced and beginning sewer can enjoy both the process and end product of a pattern. ‘The patterns are basic and straightforward, but with amazing results’ professes Jamie.

Jamie hails from Southern California and this is reflected in her designs which have an easy and fun, modern bohemian feel. She has recently brought out two new dress patterns: the ‘Mission Maxi’ and the ‘Miz Mozelle’. The Mission Maxi is a maxi dress in knit fabric with three different views. One view offers a large godet attached to the back which adds a wonderful elegance to this easy to wear dress. ‘I think the reason why I enjoy it so much is because of its blend of comfort and fashion’ says Jamie. It’s a holiday wardrobe in itself – super in the day for poolside lounging or dressed up for easy nights out. The Miz Mozelle ‘named after my Granny’ says Jamie, is a vintage inspired piece featuring a Peter Pan collar with a keyhole bodice. ‘The keyhole bodice keeps it from looking too stuffy’ she says.

A charming aspect of Jamie Christina patterns is that they are pieces she is designing to wear herself. As a mother of three there is an all important ease not just to their wearabilty but also their practical and quick construction. ‘I am a one woman show, so time is an issue’ says Jamie. ‘I purposely have my sewing space in a corner of the house that allows me to be where my family is. I used to have my sewing space in the back of the house and I felt like I never saw my kids. I have a sewing desk picked up from an estate sale. It has a space for everything and when I’m done sewing for the day I just close it up. Everything looks nice and neat just sitting there waiting for me to wake it up the next morning.’

Jamie comes from a line of talented seamstresses. Her Granny used to make skating costumes for her daughters when they were little. ‘I am told that the other contestants and their mom’s were always excited to see what new costume my granny would design next’ says Jamie. Although Jamie did not get direction from her Granny, her mother did and in turn she passed this on to Jamie, but it wasn’t until adult life that Jamie really developed a love and appreciation for sewing. Although, she remembers one of the first things she had to sew – a nine patch pillow in 8th grade. ‘My mom said she knew I would be a good seamstress because all of my corners matched up perfectly’ says Jamie, ‘At least that’s how she remembers it, I remember ripping out seams everyday in class just to get them perfect!’

And Jamie and her mother are going to be working closely going forward. Jamie is handing over the online fabric shop to her mother. ‘Most of my work time is spent designing sewing patterns. I feel that to run a successful online shop you have to spend more time than I am able to devote to it. My mom is the perfect person to take over the business and it still gives me the opportunity to gush over the beautiful fabric and maybe sample some of it too!‘

This is all great news for us here in the UK as it means Jamie is able to dedicate her time to designing more of her stylish patterns!

Jamie Christina - New Patterns

Jamie Christina has just brought out two new sewing patterns.  We have just got them into the shop, along with an older one that we have not stocked before, and we are really pleased to have them 'on the shelf'.

The two new ones are both dress patterns.

The Mission Maxi is 'a soft free flowing maxi dress with plenty of options to choose from: tank top maxi, halter top maxi, and godet back maxi.'  The tank top and halter to can be made in a shorter length to create vest tops too! Designed to be sewn up in knit fabrics, this pattern is a super first time knit project.

The Miz Mozelle Dress is a 'vintage inspired pattern featuring a peter pan collar, keyhole neckline, and an easy to make elastic waist'. This pattern recommends stretch fabrics with drape; however, you can use woven fabrics too. Just go up one size for the Bodice, Collar, and Sleeves.

Finally, we've add to our pattern collection another apron... the Cupcake Apron is a great addition with full and half versions with several options.

Oh, and these three new patterns takes us to 100 different patterns in the shop.  I know! A whole hundred different sewing patterns from independent designers.  How cool is that?!

Anna Maria Horner :: LouLouThi :: I think I'm in love again...

Honestly, I am really taken with these fabrics.  Anna Maria Horner is a genius of colour.  I didn't really 'get' them until they turned up on my doorstep today.  I have spent some time photographing them and cutting some fat quarters off, and BANG!! It didn't take long and I am head over heels.  Really this woman knows how to tickle the right spot.

So, with no further ado, here is Lou Lou Thi from Anna Maria Horner.

In Anna Maria's own words: The Loulouthi collection is a treasure box of all that I love about flowers and fabric coming together in form and inspiration. The world loulouthi simply translates from Greek as "flower". But in an ongoing story, my cultural heritage has enlivened these fabrics with visions of needleworks in progress, the gentle tending of village gardens, and the luxury of living alongside everyday works of art. The language of flowers and and floral handiwork has spoken to me since before I could thread my own needles, and this collection is my reply to all that beauty.

We are stocking 8 prints.  You can buy yardage, or a bundle of all eight.

Enjoy!

New Spring 2011 season from 'Patterns by Figgy's'

I'm happy to announce that we now have the new collection of patterns in the shop from Patterns by Figgy's.  There are three new styles in this collection, all for children aged 18 months to 6/7 years.  Each pattern has two styles, and picking up on the success of the Tee for Two pattern, two of the new styles have both boy and girl options.  How brilliant is that?

There is the Jane Dress and Blouse.  Perfect for the girly girl, this pattern has puff-sleeved long or short options with pockets for the dress and a hip sash for the blouse.

Then there is the Franco & Fiona Dress and Blouse, an asymmetrical asymmetrical vest and pinafore.  Both items are fully lined with fresh lines and crisp inverted pleats which show off contrasting fabric really smartly.

Finally, there is the Vien & Rue Jackets.  These smart, fair-weather, double-breasted, fully lined jackets for girls or boys, have options for buttons sleeve tabs, back belt, and a round or pointed collar.

So, which of these are you tempted by?
